Congratulations to Our Greenbuild iPad Winner!
Wednesday, January 22, 2014
On November 21st-22nd, Enerliance was able to attend the Greenbuild expo and trade show in Philadelphia. Greenbuild brings together industry leaders, experts and other professionals who are dedicated to green building.
After three days packed with brilliant speakers, incredible networking opportunities, industry showcases and workshops, we left Greenbuild inspired and excited for the future of sustainable building.
While we were there, we also met some fantastic colleagues, and scanned their badges to give them a chance at winning a free iPad.
The results are in. Ladies and gentlemen, please join us as we congratulate John Thigpen, the energy manager at Family Dollar Stores, Inc.. We caught up with John, and discussed the conference and his big win.
ENL: Tell us a little about yourself and your position as energy manager.
JOHN: I am an energy manager with Family Dollar Stores, a national retail chain with over 8,000 locations. I am working to apply new energy technologies and best practices to reduce energy consumption, improve energy management and contribute to our sustainability efforts. I have been with Family Dollar a little over one year, having previously worked in support of a Department of Defense program that tests and evaluates emerging energy technologies.
ENL: Why were you attending the Greenbuild trade show?
JOHN: I’ve attended Greenbuild for several years now. I really value the education sessions, the opportunity to network with peers and the exposure to new products. And most importantly, I always come away from that show with a renewed focus on sustainability.
ENL: What sorts of things did you enjoy at the conference?
JOHN: The Master Speaker series are my favorite. Edward Mazria spoke about the 2030 Challenge, and his remarks really drove home the importance of the work we do, and how critical it is for us to do more. There is also plenty of time where exhibit hall hours don’t conflict with other conference activities, so you can converse with exhibitors and determine in real time if there is a business opportunity.
ENL: What new things did you learn? How do you think you will be able to incorporate what you learned at Family Dollar’s fleet of stores?
JOHN: I was surprised to learn that underperforming new buildings was such a pervasive issue, and how valuable retrocommissioning can be in improving building efficiency and evaluating contractor performance. I intend to use our sub-metering efforts as a first step to develop a retrocommissioning program that is appropriate for us.
ENL: Were you surprised to win the iPad?
JOHN: Well, I used to say, “The only way I’d win a contest was if first place was a trip on the Titanic,” so, yes, I was surprised to win.
ENL: Is this the first prize you’ve ever won or are you usually pretty lucky?
JOHN: This is a first. If you’re looking for a sure thing, take me to Las Vegas, and do the opposite of what I do. You’ll be rich!!
ENL: Which Apps are you most excited to download and play around with?
JOHN: Well, I am relatively new to the Applesphere, so I’ve still got a lot of App discovery to do. My wife and I just bought a new home, so Apps that relate to home décor/improvement/etc. will get a lot of mileage.
ENL: Is there anything else you’d like to say?
JOHN: I’d really like to thank Enerliance and commend them on their efforts in energy conservation and management.
Thanks, John! We hope you enjoy the iPad.
